US Mint coinsUS Mint sales figures were not as robust as the week before. Nearly every category experienced slower sales, as the end of the year approaches.

American Eagle Platinum Proof coins reached their 8,000 marker and sold out before the end of the week. American Buffalo Proofs are still available.

The US Mint lowered their gold coin prices on Thursday, December 17, which is good news for any collectors buying the last of the 2009 UHR Double Eagles. The price dropped $50 to $1,489.00. The deadline to purchase one is December 31st before 3 PM Eastern Time.

American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin 2009 American Gold Buffalo Bullion Coins were on fire for the short period they were available. The United States Mint released the one-ounce, 24 karat gold coins on Oct. 15. Within five days 71,500 were sold, which represented nearly 42 percent of 2008’s total.

Although the sales pace later cooled compared to the opening numbers, the amount that left US Mint doors in either October or November turned out to be greater than any single month in 2007 or 2008. And by Dec. 4, the Buffalos sold out.

In the end, 200,000 Buffalo gold coins were purchased in 2009, topping 2007 and 2008 sales.

US Mint authorized dealers would have bought more, but no more were to be had.

"The United States Mint has depleted its inventory of 2009 American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Bullion Coins," U.S. Mint Director of Public Affairs Tom Jurkowsky said in announcing their sellout. "No additional inventory will be made available."

US Mint coinsUS Mint sales data indicate collectors were going after the 2009 Mint Uncirculated Set with a vengeance during the week of Thanksgiving, since sales jumped by more than 9,000 over the previous week. More than 28,000 sets were purchased, making the total for the year surpass the 600,000 milestone.

2009 US Mint Proof Sets were the second place top sellers for the week. Over 22,000 flew off the shelves, which was down slightly from last week’s 25,000. Still, the year-to-date sales reached an impressive 1.3 million status.

Many deadlines are approaching and should be noted. According to the US Mint’s web site, orders placed by December 7th for any in-stock items will be delivered by December 25th via Standard Delivery, and orders placed by December 11th can still make it by the 25th via Express Delivery. Also, December 11th is the deadline to order any of the Braille Silver Dollars or the Braille Education Set.

US Mint coinsAccording to the last US Mint sales figures, one ounce gold collector coins slowed compared to the prior report, while half ounce gold coins gained. It could be high prices that caused the slow down, but it’s more likely that most collectors and investors simply focused on bullion coins.

One ounce UHR Gold Coins and Buffalo Proofs rose by 1,091 and 3,017 this time compared to 1,098 and 4,316 on the last report. When the half ounce First Spouse Gold Coins were combined, collectors purchased 457 in this report and 412 in the last report.

The newest Mint products include Zachary Taylor’s Presidential $1 coins that launched on Nov. 19 and the Lincoln “Presidency” Cent that launched on Nov. 12. Over 53,000 Taylor Presidential $1 Rolls were gobbled in four days, and another 21,000 Lincoln “Presidency” Cent Two Roll Sets sold in seven days.

US Mint coinsCollector mint products enjoyed a nice overall rise compared to the prior report. A new product was launched and the federal holiday last Wednesday, Nov. 11 gave collectors a full day’s notice to buy gold products before the price went up the next day.

The last penny in the 2009 Lincoln penny series, the Lincoln “Presidency” Cent, launched Thursday, Nov. 12, and sales were solid. Over 15.3 million pennies sold between its launch and Sunday when the sales figures were tallied.

Even though UHR Double Eagles and Buffalo proof coin sales slowed, many collectors were looking at First Spouse Gold Coins. The First Spouse’s gained some momentum over the last report.

US Bullion Coins & SalesThe United States Mint sold more gold bullion coins during the last seven days than the preceding week, the latest figures from the agency reveal. Sales of silver coins were also strong, but down slightly.

US Mint authorized dealers purchased another 31,500 American Gold Eagles and 12,500 more American Gold Buffalo coins from last Monday to today. That compares to the prior respective pick ups of 29,000 and 11,000.

American Silver Eagles advanced 775,000 during the same period, and passed just over 25 million for the year. Last week’s report showed that the silver eagles had climbed by 825,000.

US Mint coinsThe 2009 US Mint Uncirculated Set took top honors in last week’s sales figures for collector coins, and the Mint Proof Set was close behind. The Uncirculated Mint Set jumped another 27,694, which was higher than the previous 23,469. The Proof Set added another 20,087, which was also higher than the prior 18,080.

Sales for the hot American Buffalo Proof coins cooled a little in this report, bringing in only half the sales of the prior report, but still a decent addition. 8,487 were added, so their 2009 total hit 27,955 and passed the 2008 record.

Most of the news coverage for the week was about the Mint’s gold coin price increase and the Lincoln "Presidency" Launch last Thursday, Nov. 12. Results will be coming in the next report, and sales are expected to be mixed. The Lincoln product sales are expected to rise, but it would be no surprise if gold Double Eagles, First Spouse Coins, and American Buffalos sales decline.

US Bullion Coins & SalesMore than two million American Silver Eagles were sold to US Mint authorized dealers within the last two weeks, pulling their 2009 sales above 23 million and now over 24 million.

The latest seven day figures have cooled slightly, but still rank as one of the better weeks of the year. 825,000 more left US Mint doors compared to the home run 1,314,000 figure from last week’s bullion report.

If the pace can be maintained, silver eagles would reach 30 million this year, breaking last year’s annual tally by some 10 million.

American Buffalo Gold coin sales were weaker by nearly one third. 11,000 more were sold versus the prior 30,000. The new 2009 total is at 127,500 — an impressive number given they were released only on Oct. 15 and then when considering 172,000 were sold in all of 2008.

Finally, demand for American Gold Eagles is still strong after coming of their 5th best October ever. 11,000 more were added in the last seven days.

US Mint coinsUS Mint Sets and American Buffalo Gold Proof Coins soared above other collectibles in this week’s sales figures, but the Buffalo Proofs received the most news attention.

The Buffalo Proof’s impressive start of 19K – in just one weekend – made headlines since it nearly surpassed the one ounce 2008 Buffalo Proof sales, and the new proof began with a much higher price tag of $1,360.

In other noteworthy news, the uncirculated Mint Set crossed the half million milestone after adding 23K to the totals, and the Mint Proof set tacked on another 18K to make it reach 1,225,747.

With the upcoming launch of the Lincoln Presidency Cent on Nov. 12, we can expect to see improvements in the Lincoln Penny products next week. Also, the announced deadline for Braille Silver Dollar orders might spur more interest in coming weeks. Collectors have until Dec. 11 to purchase the last of the commemorative Braille coins.

US Bullion Coins & SalesUS Mint bullion coin sales figures popped during the last seven days, with American Silver Eagles posting particularly strong numbers that haven’t been seen in some time.

More than 1.3 million were sold since last Monday, bringing the yearly total up to 23,406,500. Further, last month figures are now finalized and it was the best October ever for the silver series that kicked off in 1986. Best ever months have been somewhat common for the coins this year, with seven others earning the title. The two that didn’t, Jan. and Sept., came in second.

American Buffalo Gold coins continue to move. Since they went on sale Oct. 15, a total of 116,500 have left US Mint doors. Another 30,500 were scooped up in the last seven days alone. At the current pace, 2009 will be a record year for the coins despite their late release.

American Gold Eagles stood out as well, with 39,000 gone in the last seven days. The eagles had their 5th best October ever, and tied September sales with 115,500. 1,069,500 have been sold this year.
