Collector Coin Sales

Gold and silver numismatic product sales were mixed, according to the latest US Mint sales figures. Buffalo proof coins faired better than all of the First Spouse coins combined, and the 18-coin Silver Proof Set climbed above both of them. In fact, the silver set climbed above its prior two week gains. More than a dozen products enjoyed gains above last week’s report, and many of them were annual proof sets.

The Disabled American Veteran Silver Dollars continued to sell strong, tacking on another 16,000 proofs and 5,000 uncirculated. The new 2010 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set was the second biggest seller of the week, adding another 15,000 to its total.

Collector product sales slowed down as a group in this round of figures from the US Mint. The biggest seller, however, was the commemorative American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar. More than 24,000 proofs and 8,000 uncirculated versions sold during the week.

The closest competitor to the Veterans coins was the 2010 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Sets. Its weekly sales increased by 11,741, but in prior weeks it had been as high as 25,512 and 76,526.

In the gold products, American Buffalo Proof coins slid from last week’s 413 down to 384. First Spouse gold coins cut back even more by decelerating from 507 to 193.

The clear leaders in US Mint collector product sales were the new proof and uncirculated American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars. Their initial sales numbers exceeded 66,000 and 32,000 respectively.

The 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Sets placed third, bringing in more than 25,000 and making their new total over 326,000. The dollar set hasn’t even been available a full month, and already its total reached just over half of the 2009 set total of 627,925.

Gold sales were mixed. More than 500 First Spouse gold coins sold in a week, and beat their prior sales by 100. American Buffalo Gold Proof sales, however, slowed down. About 400 sold, compared to over 700 in the last report. The US Mint increased these coins’ prices in the middle of the week, on Feb. 24.

The newest addition to the 2010 line up is the Millard Fillmore Presidential $1 coin rolls. Although inaugural sales weren’t as high as the last two coins in the series, they still came in with decent numbers totaling more than 51,000.

The news-maker for the week was clearly the 2010 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Sets. More than 76,000 sold during the week, bringing their total up to 300,952. It looks as if this year’s set will out perform last year’s set in a few months. Last year’s Presidential Proof Set total ended up at 627,925.

On the gold front, American Buffalo Gold Proof sales are still chugging along, adding 771 in this round. First Spouse Gold Proofs and Uncirculated together chalked up 446 new sales. The US Mint increased these coins’ prices in the middle of the week, which might give them some extra attention by the next report.

US Mint coinsSince the US Mint was closed for several days due to a snowstorm, this week’s report contained two weeks of sales increases. With the combined totals, some products did exceptionally well, while only a few were a little sluggish.

The 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Sets launched Feb. 11 and sales skyrocketed to 224,426. The 2009 Mint Sets also exploded, kind of unexpectedly, adding 15,244 to their prior 704,862 total.

The 2010 Native American dollar rolls puckered out and so did the 2010 Kennedy half-dollar bags and rolls. It’s probably no surprise, since launches are usually the high point for two of the least used coins in circulation.

2009 US Mint collector product sales continued their sluggish path, but none performed worse than the First Spouse Coins. A negative weekly total of -188 was recorded, compared to last week’s positive 240.

US Mint coinsUS Mint sales figures revealed a continued overall slowdown as collectors wait for new 2010 arrivals. Most 2009 collector product sales declined, but three products surged.

The three to outperform their prior report figures were the US Mint Proof set, Lincoln Presidency Cent Two-Roll sets, and First Spouse 24-karat Gold Coins. The Mint’s Proof set rose by 7,168 versus the prior 4,971; the Presidency Cents climbed 4,990, compared to 3,426; and First Spouse coins picked up 733 all together, beating last week’s 407.

Of all the collector products, only one retreated with a negative change. The 2009 DC & US Territories Quarters Proof Set was adjusted by -6,809. One can assume it was either an accounting correction or perhaps an unusual amount of customer returns.

US Mint coinsThe last US Mint sales figures were a bit boring, except for a few new numbers. One ounce UHR Gold Coin figures updated from 112,065 to 115,178. That means over 3,000 sold in the final available days.

Two more standout gold numbers appeared. Buffalo Proofs rose by 1,089 this time compared to last week’s 555, and after half ounce First Spouse Gold Coins were combined, collectors purchased 407 in this report versus the prior 330.

The 2008 Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set continues to sell well, adding over 1,000. Other collector sets, however, performed with less vigor than before, as many collectors are simply waiting for new 2010 products from the Mint.

US Mint coinsOverall demand for collector US Mint products chugged a little higher as last year ended and this year began. Gold coins and silver sets enjoyed some attention, while only a few saw softened sales.

The 2009 Mint Proof set had its fourth week of declining sales, even though new sales added almost 9,000. Collectors boosted sales for the 2009 Silver Proof set, buying over 7,000 this week versus the prior 6,465.

Another gainer was the Proof American Buffalo Gold Coin. Sales advanced 555, compared to the prior 522. First Spouse coins picked up 330 in all, a decent improvement over the previous 113. Unfortunately, we haven’t heard how the Mint fared with the 2009 Ultra High Relief Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles in its last four days of December. New sales numbers were not included in this report. Their total stood at 112,065.
