Collector Coin Sales

Ultra High Relief $20 Gold coin sales glowed. Collectors purchased many more of the gold pieces than in weeks past — just one shy of 3,800. As a comparison, typical weekly sales have been below 1,000.

Why the change? The increased demand is a reflection of collectors being able to buy more. The US Mint raised UHR limits from one coin per household to ten. The total sold now stands at more than 75,000.

Other Mint collector gold coin figures were less cheerful. All but one of the First Spouse Coins declined modestly. And for the most part, the Mint’s silver products, with the exception of the blazing-hot bullion American Silver Eagles, slowed as well. Next week’s Professional Life Penny launch in Illinois should bring some sparkles to upcoming numbers.

Proof Sets were the biggest winners in the latest round of US Mint Coin Sales Figures. Despite the 2009 Proof Set and the 2009 Silver Proof Set having respective youthful launch dates of only June 1 and July 17, their sales have hit whopping totals of 888,329 and 350,572.

The inclusion of the four bicentennial Lincoln cents is a large reason for what looks to be a smashing popular success of this year’s sets.

Collector coins were mostly mixed compared to last week’s coin sales report which showed higher interest in nearly all Mint offerings.

Collectors spent more money on coins as their outlook improved for nearly every US Mint product over the prior week.

In the latest US Mint sales figures ending July 19, newly released 2009 Silver Proof Sets stood out as 271,372 were purchased in only three days. Demand was at least modestly higher for other silver coins too, like the Braille Silver Dollar commemoratives. 176,332 of the proof and uncirculated coins have been purchased.

If there were losers in the group, it had to be First Spouse Gold Coins. Sales for six of the eight US Mint sold coins declined compared to the week prior.

Demand stepped down for nearly every collector coin sold by the US Mint, the latest seven day sales figures ending July 12 reveal. The traditional summer slowdown is certainly in affect.

If there is good news for the Mint, demand is sure to be exceptionally strong even in a sleepy summer for at least one new offering now available — the annual silver proof set launched Friday. US Mint sales figures were less than spectacular last week for most coin products. Factors such as a holiday shortened week weighed into the mix and the demand for collector coins retreated.

The 18-coin clad proof set numbers were still strong. 785,821 have now been grabbed from Mint store shelves since June 1. Letitia Tyler First Spouse coins were launched on Thursday, July 2, and performed reasonably well for the series. Nearly 3,000 were purchased by Sunday.

Proof sets were the biggest winner in the latest round of US Mint collector coin sales figures. Sales of the 18-coin clad sets leaped by 106,987. It was the strongest showing after the initial launch days. 684,412 have now been purchased in 28 days.

Lincoln Rail Splitter pennies also received a nice shot in the arm. Numbers picked up following several recent weeks of semi softness. 8,704 more of the two-roll sets were purchased compared to the prior 7,912.

In new releases of the week, the US Mint Issued Letitia Tyler First Spouse Coins on Thursday. For additional information that also includes biographical history of the First Lady, see Letitia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins.

It was a bit of a hum drum week for US collector coins and recent sales. While there were some new heights reached in total coins sold, week-over-week numbers for many US Mint products declined.

Expecting continual blowout weeks is of course unrealistic. Consider how long it has been since the last coin launch, for one — several weeks. And for two, the coin market is consistently less active in summer months.

Without a doubt the biggest news most collectors took note of happened on Wednesday with the Mint announcing it had added the remaining Lincoln cents of 2009 to its online subscription program. The system works much like a magazine subscription (shipping occurs after each new cent is released.) The Mint does not report subscription figures, but they had to take a huge jump given the popularity of the new redesigned pennies.

Collector coins from the US Mint again experienced mixed demand for the second straight week in June.

Although bullion Gold and Silver Eagles Sales Surged, UHR $20 coins declined by 122 compared to the prior numbers and First Spouse Gold coin numbers were simply sluggish — all eight coins suffered through weakened demand. The US Mint lowered gold coin prices on Wednesday, which should help going forward.

Demand for Guam quarters in bags and rolls retreated, but were still exceptionally high. The same is true for the Lincoln Rail Splitter penny and 2009 Proof Sets. Braille Silver Dollar sales picked up slightly.

US Mint collector coin sales were a mixed bag. Compared to the previous Mint figures, demand for gold coins generally declined while silver coins and sets improved — with the exception of the Braille Silver Dollars where totals actually shifted lower from prior numbers.

UHR $20 coins returned to their more normalized selling pace with 772 more sold. After an impressive week, five of the eight gold First Spouse coins suffered through lower sales.

Demand for Guam quarters in bags and rolls remained exceptionally high while Lincoln Rail Splitter Cent two-roll sets reached 250,577 sold.

There were several products that stood out in the latest US Mint collector coin sales figures. Most talked about were the Guam quarters. The newest 2009 commemorative quarters was recently issued and the first week of their sales in bags and quarters were high. Mintage figures were also made available.

Collector gold coins have performed reasonable well of late. No doubt the climb in gold prices toward $1,000 an ounce had helped. Sales of UHR $20 and seven of the eight First Spouse Gold Coins were better than normal.

Sales of Lincoln Rail Splitter penny rolls have eased, but not subsided. Nearly 240,000 of the two-roll sets were sold in about two weeks.

Finally, demand for the silver 2009 quarter set also increased. The non silver proof set was recently released, which likely contributed to the gains.
